Episode 03: Orvieto: ‘I Have a great talent for perseverance’ My House in Umbria (film)

Welcome to Episode #3:  Orvieto, Umbria

Considered the beautiful green heartland of Italy and nestled between Lazio, Le Marche and Tuscany.  With Perugia to the north and Terni to the south, it is an easy hour and a quarter over to Orvieto from Rome if traveling by train, possibly less by car.  And I might add a worthy visit for the Gothic beauty and medieval architecture up on top the tufa mass that is the ancient Umbrian hill top town of Orvieto.

This chapter is the beginning of my adventures around Italy on Trenitalia and has me musing over my time away from the family and life as I know it.  A few days here has me falling hard for the landscape, the architecture, the grand beauty that Italy is known for and the hearty Umbrian cuisine of the autumn season.  Enjoy......

Film quote:  My House in Umbria 2003.

“I have a great talent for perseverance”..............This movie is based on the book written by William Trevor.
And lastly I forgot to share a movie, but I think My House in Umbria is a fine choice since this chapter is connected via the landscape of Umbria after all.

Endnote on Podcast:

I am currently listening to or reading:

Eat Pray Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything by Elizabeth Gilbert on audio.
I have listened to this a number of times, Elizabeth's smooth soliloquies of her time searching within and without are a balm for the travel inspiration and for the part of me that enjoys the genre of personal growth and spirituality.  I am really hoping for a transmission of smooth vocals that I can transfer as I share my book and ideas.........Maybe in time.

See you in the Piazza:  New Places to Discover in Italy by Frances Mayes on audio.

Yay, for wandering around in my garden (since I will be weeding until September) and listening to more wonderful places and regions of Italy to discover and muse about until I can return again.

Sadly, not narrated by Frances this time.  I admit after all of the other wonderful books I am missing her spirit being a part of this sharing.  But that’s okay I know she probably doesn't have the time since she has another book on Italy due out I think maybe next year.  And the person who narrates this recent book is stunning. I have no qualms there especially since my recent forays into audio, in other words full respect.

Tortellini at Midnight and other heirloom family recipes from Taranto to Turin to Tuscany by Emiko Davies.

Since meeting Emiko at a little book tour in Australia called the Kitchen Table Tour with the beautiful Tessa Kiros I have fallen in love with this publication, such a stunning cookbook that follows her husbands family and four generations of food and love.

My Bonet: Chocolate and Amaretti Flan…..Love the subtle crunch of the Amaretti in this dish. Here one minute, gone the next.

Sidenote from Podcast Share:

My comment on the divine Bonet dessert which is a chocolate and amaretti flan is mostly correct, it is a dessert of Piemonte in the north of Italy and the capital of Piedmont (English pronunciation) is Turin. Few.

And yes, Frances starts her book ‘See You in the Piazza’ in Piemonte and Torino.  I have only this on audio and the actual real book is on my hit list once I am established after recent adventures abroad, best to wait in other words.  And I am resisting the ebook as it looks pretty damned good in paperback, a must for the bookshelf.......
