Nb. A favourite, even if it is a biography, it’s still perfect, up there with My Life in France and Provence 1970 (obviously not Italian, but a worthy mention in my opinion and my life would not be the same without them!)

Once on a gloomy day I found the film The Enchanted April, I was nineteen and yearning for something. Little did I know I would find it in a timeless film set in Italy. Over the years this film set in a 16th Century medieval fortress over looking the Ligurian Sea called Castello Brown, in the village of Portofino, would set sail to a longing for a place and a lifestyle. Elizabeth Von Armin recognised women’s lives, their struggles, possibilities and inner complexities, and she wrote with a light touch, alerting us the comedy of our lives and society at large. Much later I bought the book on Audible and always listened when I needed a laugh or a pick me up. And then, finally I bought this copy with the delightful cover by the British designer Angie Lewin and now the words float off the page inviting me again and again, giving that same nostalgic feeling f0r a life and a world I yearn to know and be part of.

A few years later it was Under the Tuscan Sun that lit a match in my existential shoe, causing me to spend many hours reading or listening while pondering Italy and pulling weeds from my rambling cottage garden and dreaming of exploring this part of the world. No where else captured by imagination like Italy. It was always there nudging me, talking to me, calling me. And on it went, into cookbooks, memoir, language, history. The Italian lessons continue to unfold and captivate me. It seems that the more you know, the more you want to know. Italy seems like an ocean in truth, far and wide, deep and reflective, and always spilling over the edges into my own beautiful and humble world.
